Contact a Construction Attorney When Assistance Needed
Video Transcribed: Tulsa Construction Attorney Brian Carter, tulsaconstructionlawyer.com. A couple of quick notes about workers’ comp I get asked often. What type of businesses are required to carry workers’ comp insurance?
In Oklahoma, pretty much every business that has employees is required to carry workers’ comp insurance or secure compensation for the employee, either by being classified as a self-insured or a qualified employer by the Workers’ Compensation Commission.
Certain businesses that don’t require to carry workers’ comp insurance are small family-owned businesses, people who operate as sole proprietors or owner-operators of trucks. And also individuals that do work as a independent contractor are not required to have workers’ comp insurance, although they can opt to be covered by workers’ comp insurance.
So, pretty much any business except for those few I mentioned are required to carry workers’ comp insurance. There are penalties for not carrying workers’ comp insurance that can result in fines and exposure to additional liability should an injury occur.
